Red side: Port tack (wind coming over your left shoulder). If your hands are on the RED side, you must give way.
You are on port tack. You must keep clear of the sailor on starboard. Pass downwind of them.
Understanding Right of Way in Sailing
The colors Red, White, and Green don’t just represent the Italian flag — in sailing, they can be used as a simple way to remember who has the right of way when two boats are crossing on different tacks.
Quick Tip:
“Green means go” — just like traffic lights. If you’re on starboard (green), you can go.
“Red means stop” — give way if you’re on port (red).

Green Side: Starboard tack (wind coming over your right shoulder). If your hands are on the GREEN side, you have the right of way.
You are on starboard tack. The other sailor (on port tack) must keep clear. Pass upwind of them.
