At Point-7 we always would have liked to see windsurfing events in amazing spots in winter.
There is a lot of wave activity in amazing spots like Australia, South Africa, Canaries, South America and so on, but we always had to wait for April to see some action and was never wave sailing first.
Finally, PWA is back and in a great wave place as Cabo Verde!
Our Point-7 Black Team rider Josep Pons born in Mallorca, but leaving with his family in Gran Canaria, has taken the plane today to get some training done before the event.
How much earlier will you go to the event? I’m in the airport right now. Haha the 10th of February, so I will have almost 10 days to adapt to the conditions.
What is the name of the spot and the typical conditions in this period of the year? Technically the event will take place on any spot, and this is cool, and the way wave events should be logistically. The best spot of the day. but the idea is to do it in Punta Preta as main spot. In case the swell is not good, the event can be moved to orders spots around the island.
Have you ever competed or sailed the spot? Not competed, but I’ve been in Cabo Verde twice to sail, in 2008 and 2018. Is an amazing place for wave riding. It is a dream island.
Jumping and wave riding, what will be the most important? Is well known for the starboard tack down the line wave riding conditions. It can also work on port tack, but less usual.
Which type of boards and sail set up will you use? As it’s easy to finish on the rocks and break masts and sails, I take the Point-7 Salt pro in double sizes 2×4,7 – 2×5,0 – 2×5,3, 6 masts, 3 booms, and three boards. With Carlos Sosa, I just shaped a few custom boards for especially for CV. I could test on the north shore of Gran Canaria, and the Salt pro, combined with the new shapes, really works well! I’m ready for the first event of the year.
Gran Canaria to CV is next door, what is the travel journey? It looks near, but due the flight is hard to fly to CV from Gran Canaria. I think is easier and cheaper to fly to Maui????. I must fly to Via Madrid – Lisbon- to arrive in Sal.
Thank you, Josep, we will be cheering and watching you on the live channel from the PWA site from the 20-28th of February!
